In this programme we explore how one local authority uses designated teachers to monitor the 500 looked-after children in its schools.
Sue Dean is the corporate parenting consultant in charge of the looked-after children in Nottinghamshire. She monitors their progress, relying heavily on her team of designated teachers throughout the county.
One such teacher, Hilary Madden, works at Tuxford School in Newark. She believes in a needs-led approach, tailoring education to the specific requirements of individual students.
An example of this approach can be seen in Josh, a looked-after pupil at the school whose alternative curriculum has been devised to include two days each week on placement at a local business.
