Anne Farrell, maths co-ordinator at St Gregory's School in Sandwell, uses visualisation techniques to teach her Year 3 class.
The class sit facing Anne in rows whilst confident children volunteer to help out with a variety of calculations, using paper cups to illustrate the sums.
First up, Clara attempts 6 / 3. She moves six cups over to the maths table and then works out how many piles of three cups there should be.
Similar demonstrations follow for 6 / 6 and 6 / 1 and then, by cutting the paper cups in half, the children are able to calculate 3 / ½.
In a second lesson, Anne demonstrates the use of supportive group work where some children pair off and use counters to solve problems involving larger numbers.
