KS3/4 Science - Fighting HIV: The Lesson

Description

Laura Seabright is a science teacher at Crofton School in Lewisham. With her top set class she investigates HIV transmission with a practical demonstration involving milk powder and starch solution that mimics the transfer of bodily fluids. It's a tricky subject but with guidance from Laura the pupils handle the topic with remarkable maturity.

After putting aside some common misconceptions about HIV and AIDS, Laura sets up a group activity where the students discuss whether funds should be spent on HIV treatment or prevention.

Laura's class proves to be not only knowledgeable about HIV and AIDS, but also quite passionate about the issue.

Ralph Levinson for the Institute of Education is on-hand to offer some help dealing with these difficult issues in the classroom and he is very impressed with what he sees.
