Secondary Special Needs - EBD - Preparing to Leave

Description

According to Ofsted, Cuckmere House Special School "significantly enhances the life chances of its students". This programme explores how the school helps EBD students prepare for an independent and successful future and talks to students about life beyond school.

What can mainstream schools learn from their approach? Cuckmere House provides a safe and secure environment for students with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties. The programmes focuses on students like Steven and Kyle in Year 11 who hope to join the army after their GCSEs.

The school has high academic expectations but it also offers a varied vocational curriculum. In Year 11, students get the chance to work outside the school environment, which is vital for developing social skills. Of eight leavers last year, five passed their GCSEs and went to college, and one is working full time.
