In a successful innovation on evaluating teaching and learning, pupils observe and rate the teachers at George Mitchell School, east London. This secondary's headteacher believes student voice was a vital missing ingredient.
With the co-operation of her staff, enthusiastic headteacher Helen Jeffery, a graduate of the DfES trainee headship scheme, has created a student voice. Students actually help to run the school by observing lessons, interviewing for new members of staff and attending staff meetings and INSET days.
This new initiative, called Making Learning Better, is deemed a success and has been rolled out across the whole school. All of the school's departments now have students getting directly involved with improving the learning process.
The students at George Mitchell not only influence who teaches them and how, but also what they are learning.
