Secondary Special Needs - Back in the Mainstream

Description

Shoeburyness High School in Southend-on-Sea has developed a fresh approach to supporting children with special needs in a mainstream school.

In Year 7, those children who find transfer to secondary particularly difficult are taught in a small single class called the achievement group. They are supported with a curriculum differentiated to meet their needs which is delivered by primary-trained teachers.

• Wherever possible, the long term aim is to get children back into the mainstream
• The programme follows two children who, after receiving dedicated support for a term and a half in the achievement group, are now ready to make the move
