Time Management

Description

Stuart Tatterton is a former salesman. He now teaches maths at King James's school in North Yorkshire. This programme charts his progress over the course of his first term of teaching and takes a detailed look at how Stuart is tackling time management.

The autumn term gets off to a good start. Despite having a reduced timetable as a newly qualified teacher, Stuart still teaches 19 lessons a week, compared to the 11 lessons a week he had during his teaching practice. But with marking, lesson planning and break-time duties to contend with in addition to his classroom teaching, the increased workload soon begins to take its toll.

To ease the load, Stuart makes a marking timetable showing when the homework is set, when it's handed in and when it's due back. He also tries setting homework online, using an internet application.

Advice also comes from colleague Gareth Dale:

• Remember that your marking will become easier the more you do, you'll get better at it
• Try setting work that is less marking intensive
• Give work a grade for overall effort. It doesn't always have to be about checking all the details
