Stamshaw Infant School shows its effective three stage plan to encourage more boys to read at Key Stage 1 and 2.
Stage one includes recruiting male volunteers (often relatives) who agree to spare some time in the future to visit the pupils, while stage two involves staging a special assembly - exclusively for boys - where teachers announce a secret boys club, known as BERT.
Finally, stage three sees the recruited male role models visiting the pupils and reading with them.
So far, the reading scheme has attracted support from dads, granddads and uncles, and since it began the pupils progress has accelerated.
Now the boys enjoy reading for pleasure and they look forward to the book club where they can select new stories from a treasure chest.
