Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teachers share their strategies for supporting pupils to write a variety of non-fiction text types, from instruction to discussion, explanation and recount, in this CPD resource.
Teaching ideas discussed include pupils learning the rules of different text types through physical actions, a technique that deputy heateacher, Peta Blow, calls the VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) approach.
The teachers also talk about how organising a debate between pupils can be an effective way to encourage their ideas to flow for discussion texts.
Getting pupils to design an imaginary machine to help with writing their explanation texts and sending pupils off around school to interview teachers about events taking place to provide substance for their recounts are two more strategies they suggest for success.
