A PSHE lesson on enterprise for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with accompanying lesson plan and classroom resources.
As part of a World of Work unit a Year 8 class are set the challenge to originate a fruit smoothie recipe which can be sold for profit, with a percentage contributed to charity.
The lesson begins with students thinking about market price and seasonal fluctuations as different fruits are passed round. The teacher then plays the short video Tutti Frutti, shot at a smoothie manufacturer's headquarters. This prompts the product challenge.
Once the students have drafted a recipe in pairs, using the information sheets about costings, they work in groups to agree on a winning recipe. This means pitching to their peers, justifying their decisions and negotiating.
Finally, they make their smoothies, enough for everyone in class to be part of the tasting and judging session. The plenary focuses on the profit likely to be made from the winning recipe and decisions about the percentage which could be given to charity.
