This KS2 English lesson starter draws on a scene from The Railway Children to inspire writing activities for Year 5 and 6 children.
A film extract from The Railway Children, based on the book by E. Nesbitt, provides pupils with an opportunity to write their own dramatic story about bravery.
Pupils are asked to study the scene where the children stand on the railway tracks, waving makeshift flags, to alert the oncoming train to the landslide.
During the extract, Year 5 and 6 pupils talk about the scene, the characters, who they most identify with and what they would have done. This provides a useful example for classroom discussion.
Teachers can also discuss risk-taking and health and safety issues with the class.
