The Montessori Method

Description

A look at the Montessori method of teaching and attitudes towards it. Is it an outdated system or a successful approach to child development and learning?

In the UK, the Montessori philosophy was traditionally associated with the private sector, but is now extending its reach to the state sector, with four state primaries now adopting Montessori at foundation stage.

Maria Montessori came up with the approach to teaching while working in the slums of Rome. The Montessori concept is that a child learns most when it is active, and a physical approach works best to encourage self-motivation.

At Gorton Mount Primary in Manchester, headteacher Carol Powell has gained funding to train her staff for early years and KS1 in the Montessori method of teaching, demonstrating how the approach works when combined with standard teaching practices.
