Random Drug Testing

Description

Meet the first school in the country to introduce random drug testing - Abbey School in Faversham. Headteacher Peter Walker believes the policy will act as a deterrent while identifying pupils who are abusing drugs.

In this whole-school video on healthy living, which links with Every Child Matters, Peter discusses his scheme with pupils and explains why he believes it to be necessary for human health and safety. But another local headteacher Jane Percy believes the scheme may drive pupils away from the secondary school. Her view is shared by some of the students and education officer Jenny McWhirter.

See how samples are collected, hear Peter's policy on students who test positive for illegal drugs and discover why parents need to be kept well-informed about schools' drugs policies.

Peter's robust approach is rejected by many drug educators, but many others agree, claiming a soft approach on drugs is ineffective.
