St Francis Xavier Primary School can proudly proclaim to be one of the healthiest schools in their region, all in spite of serious social problems in the local area.
The current head at the West Midlands school has overseen a transformation with the National Healthy Schools Programme by implementing a series of radical changes at the school.
Lunchtimes have been revolutionised with new play equipment, play leaders and a healthy eating club, and an after-school club has forged links with a local supermarket to promote the use of fair-trade ingredients in their cookery.
In a bid to be greener, the students now grow their own vegetables, energy around the school is saved and conserved, and links have been forged with an Indian school to sell fair trade items for charity.
