The City Academy, Bristol opened in September 2003, replacing St George School in the city's east end.
A specialist sports college catering for 11 to 18-year-olds, its consortium of sponsors - Bristol City Football Club, University of the West of England and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce - contribute support totalling 2 million.
The successful link with the football club means the Academy's sports facilities need to be of a professional standard, with resulting benefits to school and local community. This programme features four students studying for NVQ as sports leaders. Part of their training includes teaching sports skills to primary school children.
The course is not only intended for those interested in a sporting career. Students get to develop key skills such as taking responsibility for others, behavioural management and problem-solving.
Ahmed, for instance, wants to be a doctor, but lacks the confidence for public speaking. He enrolled to overcome his fears.
