Citizenship - How Do They Do It In France?

Description

A revealing look at the way in which the French education system approaches the teaching of citizenship, and how this compares to the approach of British schools.

Though teaching methods are similar in many ways, there are a number of stark differences in the social backdrops against which the subject is taught in both countries.

Though the British curriculum tends to emphasise multiculturalism, French republican values dictate that, in the eyes of the state, everyone is French; a view echoed by teachers and pupils alike.

In this programme we see how a secondary school in Lyon teaches these republican values while also encouraging pupils to think for themselves through classroom debate.
