Professor David Burghes believes the teaching of maths in the UK to be in crisis and claims that countless government initiatives to improve mathematics teaching have failed.
Offering solutions to the problem, Burghes - former head of The National Centre for Excellence in Maths - takes inspiration from Hungary. There, teachers operate in a livelier, more interactive fashion involving the whole class, promoting the use of correct mathematical terms.
He suggests going back to basics, encouraging children to understand the conceptual building blocks of mathematics so they can become mathematical thinkers.
