Safer Pupils

Description

Thousands of pupils are assaulted by their peers every term. How can schools work with them to help to create a safe and supportive learning environment?

Through dramatic reconstruction, this programme explores some of the security issues facing young people in schools today.

The senior management team at Islington Green School in London share their experiences on how they've managed to turn a failing inner-city school into a calmer, safer and more successful environment. Safety expert Andy Briers discusses ways in which the police and schools are working together in order to address the issue of pupil safety.

Key points:

  • It's the minority of pupils that cause the majority of problems
  • If teachers respect students, that respect will be reciprocated
  • Identifying no-go areas within the school where violence is likely can help to ease tension
