Headteacher Steve Davies is pioneering novel ways to encourage fathers to take a more active role in their children's education.
This programme looks at Steve's inspirational work with fathers whose children attend Coopers Lane Primary School in the London borough of Lewisham. Monthly group meetings take place in the local pub, with the neutral territory providing a relaxed atmosphere where the fathers can explore possible ways to contribute to their children's education.
Steve maintains that positive paternal involvement in their children's learning leads to improved exam results, better school attendance and better behaviour. "Dads are really scared of coming into school," he says. "They see it as a mother's job, especially at primary age. They find it difficult to actively engage with their own children's learning."
Dads Matter aims to break down traditional views of education in the home and gently encourage fathers into the classroom.
