A trainee advanced skills teacher (AST) aims to teach excellent lessons and likes to take an ambitious and action-packed approach. But he struggles to fit it all in. John Bayley provides time-management advice.
Tim Gaylor has stepped down from head of science at a secondary school to train as an AST. John observes his Year 10 science class and is worried that Tim doesn't leave enough time at the end of lessons for reinforcing learning with a good plenary.
The following week Tim improves his timing with a strongly structured three-part lesson.
However, to end the lesson, he takes a big risk with an imaginative though complicated plenary activity. For some of the pupils it's a hit, but for others it's clearly a struggle, as shown in this pedagogy resource.
